Chirality and achirality in crystallography
by H. D. Flack, Laboratoire de Cristallographie, Université de Genève, Switzerland.Participants at the school were provided with a colour printout of the slides used. These can not be reproduced here because some of the material is copyright. However in the following publications, one can find all of the necessary information:

Exercises
Participants were provided with printed copies of the following five papers and asked to comment on them. For reasons of copyright the articles themselves can not be copied here but stable links by way of DOI's are provided.L-Valinium hydrogenphosphite. L. Bendheif, N. Benali-Cherif, L. Benguedouar, K. Bouchouit and H. Merazig (2003). Acta Cryst. E59, o141 - o142.
Absolute Configuration of (+)-α-Dihydrotetrabenazine, an Active Metabolite of Tetrabenazine. M. R. Kilbourn, L. C. Lee, M. J. Heeg, and D. M. Jewett (1997). Chirality 9, 59 – 62.
Mn1-xFexS, x ~ 0.05, an example of an anti-wurtzite structure. L. Eriksson and M. P. Kalinowski (2001). Acta Cryst. E57, i92 - i93.
(Rs )-4-p-Toluenesulfinylcyclohexa-l,4-dienecarboxylic Acid Ethyl Ester. R. Retoux, J. Molenkamp, E. Bonfand P. Gosselin and C. Maignan (1996). Acta Cryst. C52, 2290 - 2292.
The ‘absolute structure’ of dimethyldiphenylphosphonium iodide. F, Dornhaus, H.-W. Lerner and M. Bolte (2005). Acta Cryst. E61, o1657 – o1658.
The participants worked in small groups and it was encouraging to see that was a good deal of interaction between people with training in chemistry, physics, mathematics and materials science. All of these papers have certain negative aspects to them. For a future effort I would include some which would require only positive comments.
